The six individual theaters range in size from 126 seats to 247 seats and are configured with stadium-style seating to maximize viewer comfort and visibility and to best accommodate accessibility requirements. Special attention was paid to energy effiency and overall operational costs for the lifespan of the building.
Built by C. R. Reynolds, General Contractors of Sherman, Texas, under a competitively bid lump sum contract of $2,504,000.00 ($124.70/sq. Ft.), the DMAX theater has already proven itself to be a major cultural asset to this small, but progressive North Texas community.

After decades of recurring structural problems, the historic and beloved Peristyle in Bywaters Park, designed by renowned Paris architect J. L. Wees, in 1932, was completely dismantled and restored to its original beauty. The structural foundation was completely demolished and replaced with a new foundation on drilled concrete piers and a suspended structural floor slab. The dismantled Leuders limestone elements were carefully dismantled, cleaned & restored to their original condition. Broken or damaged stones were replaced with new stones taken from the original quarry and carved to faithfully match the original. Utmost care was taken in all aspects of the project in order to restore and preserve this architectural treasure, which is used heavily by the community for concerts, weddings, and other special events.

The work was performed under two separate contracts directed by Denney Architects. The restoration work was performed by the Bryant Company of Fort Worth, Texas at a cost of $123,700.00. The general construction work, including the new foundation, new terrazzo floor, new flatwork adjacent to the Peristyle structure, and electrical work was performed by Spann Concrete Construction of Paris, at a cost of $99,900.00.

David Denney began his career in 1961 as an architectural draftsman in the firm of Will H. Lightfoot and Associates, Paris, Texas. From 1963-1968, after earning an Associate of Science degree from Paris Junior College, he studied architecture at the University of Texas at Austin and earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1968.

Upon completing his formal education, David served a three-year apprenticeship in the firm of Scudder and Wadsworth, Austin, Texas and in 1971 received his license to practice architecture in Texas.

From 1971 to 1973, David worked as an associate architect in the firm of Nix, Spencer, Herolz and Durham in Houston, Texas, with special emphasis on health care and educational facilities.

In 1973, David returned to Paris and joined his father in the firm of B. P. Denney, Architect, as a project architect involved extensively in the design of health care facilities, educational facilities, banking and commercial, industrial, governmental, worship and residential facilities.

In 1991, upon the retirement of their father, David and his brother, Paul, formed the firm of Denney Architects, Inc., and together they have continued to provide innovative designs and the best possible architectural service to the Northeast Texas region.

Having grown up in a family of architects, Paul Denney began his architectural career as a teenager, serving as an architectural draftsman in the firm with his father and brother. He earned an Associate of Science degree from Paris Junior College and went on to study architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree and a Master of Architecture degree in 1981.

Upon completion of his professional training, Paul returned to the family business in Paris and served his internship until 1983, when he received his license to practice architecture in the State of Texas.

From that time until 1991, Paul served as a project architect for a broad range of projects, providing extensive design service for health care facilities, educational facilities, banking and commercial, industrial, governmental, worship and residential facilities.
In 1991, upon the retirement of his father, Paul joined his brother in forming the firm of Denney Architects, Inc., and has continued to provide the Northeast Texas region with the highest quality architectural service, developing a special expertise in historical restoration and adaptive re-use of historic structures.

Martha Duke has served as the office manager of Denney Architects since 1976. Her wealth of experience in the day-to-day operations of the firm is a key element in the organization’s efficiency and productivity. Martha’s duties far exceed those of a typical office manager. She is the principal organizer and proofreader of the final production documents, making sure that all “I’s” are dotted and “T’s” crossed.

Martha was instrumental in the development of Denney Architects’ unique project outlining system and is solely responsible for the cataloging and ongoing maintenance of what has become one of the largest drawing libraries in Northeast Texas.

Known among her colleagues as the “den mother” of Denney Architects, her relentless efficiency is crucial to the overall effectiveness of the firm, allowing the design professionals to concentrate on the projects at hand without worry about the mundane problems that continually arise in any business office.

That same year, Beatrice obtained her license to practice architecture in Venezuela.

From 2004 through early 2007, Beatrice gained experience in all phases of architectural practice, from conceptual design to construction monitoring, while working for several different firms, as well as doing freelance work in Venezuela.

From 2007 to the present, Beatrice has been employed as a design associate at Denney Architects in Paris, Texas, both as a designer and a project manager, with special emphasis on digital production, presentations and graphic design. A talented photographer, she has contributed significantly to achieving the firm’s goal of providing the most up-to-date, cutting edge technology to the practice. Her discerning eye has become an essential part of the Denney group.
A 2007 graduate of the Universidad Nacional Experimental del Táchira (UNET) in San Cristóbal, Venezuela, Reina Palma possesses a broad range of architectural skills and experience that belies her age. The daughter of an architect, she, too, has grown up in an architectural office and has demonstrated a sensitivity and understanding of the practice that few young architects enjoy in the early days of their careers.

Licensed to practice architecture in Venezuela, Reina has built an impressive résumé of professional accomplishments, beginning in her father’s firm in Táchira in 2003. With emphasis on construction management, she is experienced in all phase of architectural practice and had completed numerous commercial and residential projects for both architectural firms and construction companies before coming to the United States.

From 2010 to the present, Reina has served as a design associate at Denney Architects, both as a designer and a project manager, with special emphasis on project management and document production. A gifted organizer and talented designer, well versed in the latest technology, she has become a major contributor and an indispensable part of the Denney organization.

This project is the first phase of what will ultimately be a complete restoration of the historic Grand Theater in downtown Paris, Texas. The project includes selective demolition and hazardous materials abatement and replacement of missing architectural elements on the exterior façade. The work includes considerable research of the evolution of the theater façade over several decades.

Originally constructed as a vaudeville theater shortly after the Great Fire of 1916, the present façade was constructed in 1937 as part of a major remodeling of the theater. This project is being funded by a Certified Local Government grant from the U. S. Department of the Interior, National Parks Service and administered by the Texas Historical Commission.
